Employment Services

The Employment Delivery Group of the Learning Disability Partnership Board has commissioned 3 supported employment schemes to help people with learning disabilities, autism and other hidden disabilities get jobs.

Mencap Roadways

What we do

Mencap Roadways aim to give people aged over 18 years who live in Wakefield district with a mild to moderate learning disability, equal opportunities to get and keep rewarding jobs that match their individual needs and preferences.

Support starts with an assessment to understand an individual's strengths and find out what they would like to do.  From there an individual learning plan is created, working closely with them to build up the confidence and skills they need to achieve their aspirations.

The range of practical support and training Mencap provides includes:

  • training on how to get to and from work using public transport

  • searching for a job, writing a CV and making job applications

  • mock interviews to build confidence and help overcome nerves

  • placements for people who will benefit from work experience before searching for a permanent job

  • on-the-job training to help people get settled in and understand what the job requires

  • ongoing support and advice if any difficulties arise or if any further skills training is needed.

The service offers a person centred package of support in the work place and getting to and from work.  Your support worker will work with your new manager to help you learn what to do in your job and gain confidence.
