    Shared Lives

We have ordinary families who are happy to have people live with them in their family home.  They will provide you with a room of your own and will treat you as part of the family.

You will have your own tenancy agreement and you will be secure in your accommodation as if it was your own home.

It is important to match carers and those that use the service, to make sure you stay with the right family. You will be able to visit their home before you decide whether you want to say with them.

    How long can I stay?

Some people stay permanently with their Shared Lives carer.  Others use Shared Lives as a stepping stone to more independent accommodation.  For example, our carers are really good at helping you to learn new skills so you can live more independently, such as how to look after your money or how to cook a nice meal.

We have families throughout the Wakefield district, and anyone over the age of 18 with a learning disability and an assessed need for housing and support, is eligible to receive a service from us.

    How to access the service

You will need to have a Community Care Assessment, which is undertaken by a Social Worker or Social Care Manager.  You will also have a financial assessment and we will tell you how much you will have to pay towards the costs.

For an initial chat about how this might suit you, please telephone 01924 302681.  We also have an easy read leaflet which tells you more about the service.  You can also follow the link on the Local Services page of this website, which links to the Shared Lives website.
